the moneymore ufo incident
While researching information for the Anomalous Ireland expedition, I performed the customary "search of the FBI vault" for any possible strangeness in Ireland that the FBI may have had their eyes on over the years. It didn't take long before I got a hit. That's when the synchronicities started to manifest. The search results took me to Moneymore, Northern Ireland. Where the synchronicities come in is the fact that I was literally 5 miles from Moneymore when I performed the search. Better yet, Moneymore was included in file 15 of the FBI's UFO files. As I scanned down through the 77 pages of file 15, I found letters to J. Edgar Hoover, details on UFO's spotted by Soviet radar and even reports on anomalous aircraft in the Black Forest of Austria. Then I came across a selection of press articles that the FBI had deemed of interest and decided to include in the file. One of which, from the San Francisco Sunday Examiner & Chronicle, detailed a 7th of September, 1956 UFO incident in Moneymore, Northern Ireland. Moneymore is a quiet little village, founded as a plantation village in County Derry/Londonderry in Northern Ireland. Today there's two schools, six churches and about 1500 residents. The population in 1956 was about 650 people. As 648 of those people were going about their business, two of them were about to have the experience of a lifetime. The story, as detailed in file 15 of the FBI's UFO files, goes as follows: MONEYMORE, Northern Ireland An Irishman named Thomas J. Hutchinson swore to police Saturday that he captured a flaming red flying saucer, but it got away. "I had difficulty in holding it down," he explained. Hutchinson said the incident, one of the most intriguing County Darry cops have heard in years, happened this way: He was sitting at home with his wife Maud about noon Friday when an object dropped from low clouds to the only dry piece of ground in the middle of a bog 200 yards from his front door. He and his wife sloshed across the bog and found the object lying motionless. It was egg-shaped, about 3 feet high and 18 inches in diameter. "It was bright red." said Hutchinson, "with two dark red marks at the end and three dark red stripes. It had a saucer-shaped base." The Hutchinsons watched the gadget for a few moments. "I kicked it over." said the Irishman, "but it returned to its original position." When he got down on his hands and knees to examine the baffling object more closely it started to spin. He put a hammer lock on the saucer, but it was pretty powerful. "The police station." said Hutchinson, "was the only place for such a wicked looking thing as this and I started to carry it there." But on the way to the village of Loup, Hutchinson had to get through a hedge. "I put the saucer down for a moment," he said, "and what do you think? It started spinning again." Before he had time to throw himself on the queer colored invader, it rose quickly and disappeared into the rain laden clouds. Another article read; In Northern Ireland, Tom Hutchinson saw a saucer drop into a peat bog near his home in Moneymore. It was eggshaped, three feet in diameture, 18 inches high. It began to spin and Hutchinson grabbed it. He was carrying it to the police, who described him as "level-headed and God-fearing." when the thing twisted out of his hands and got away. Out of the 650 residents of Moneymore in 1956, hardly anybody knew about the incident. Even today it would be quite a task to find someone in the area who has heard the tale. There's legends and folklore, thousands of years old, that everybody in the area knows about, but the 1956 Moneymore UFO incident, nobody. The story, however, took America by storm. At the time, the story was covered coast to coast by numerous newspapers and there were certainly details in the story that grabbed the attention of the FBI. Possibly enough of an interest to ensure the locals were kept in the dark.
At the very least, we know the FBI knew about small, egg shaped (or possibly tic-tac) UFOs as early as 1956 and we've got Moneymore, Northern Ireland to thank for that information.
